Cristabel O’Brien

Speech Language Pathologist Assistant

About Cristabel

I am a Speech and Language Pathologist Assistant with experience in both a hospital and a school setting. I am here to help clients communicate more effectively with loved ones and make meaningful connections with the world.

My story begins with my personal experience. Initially, I was inspired to enter this field by a personal connection. I saw my grandfather who suffered a stroke, gradually make improvements in speech and mobility with the help of a multidisciplinary team and a therapeutic treatment plan. Inspired by this, I graduated from MacEwan University in 2019 with a diploma in Speech and Language Therapeutic Assistance. My professional journey began at the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital through Alberta Health Services while working with pediatric and adult patients in targeting a variety of goals. Such goals included articulation, voice, fluency, auditory comprehension, reading comprehension, clear speech strategies, social communication, Augmentative/Alternative Communication (AAC) and more. Afterwards, I had the opportunity to switch gears and work in the school system. Specifically, I worked with neurodiverse learners while targeting pre-literacy skills (eg. phonological/phonemic awareness), language, AAC exploration and reading interventions. Moreover, after working with people across the lifespan, from children with developmental delays & communication disorders to adults recovering from stroke & brain injury, I have seen first hand, the positive impact on the lives of those receiving speech and language therapy services. With this new professional practice, my focus is on quality. I am passionate about supporting clients in reaching speech and language goals while also working with a collaborative team of families and professionals. Essentially, my role as a Speech and Language Pathologist Assistant involves implementing evidence-based treatment plans designed by SLPs and documenting client progress along the way.

Outside of my professional life, I enjoy hiking, baking, reading, gardening, crafting, canoeing, cross-country skiing, travelling, studying Polish and playing board games with my family.
